The best wall finish for a Boise bathroom
Bathrooms are the hardest room in the house for a wall finish. Standing humidity, direct spray, temperature swings, and daily cleaning all work against the surface at once.
There is a clear answer for most Boise bathrooms, and one useful exception.
The answer is usually microcement
Microcement cures hard and continuous. There are no grout lines, no seams, and no joints, which means there is nowhere for water to get behind and nowhere for mold to establish itself.
That single property solves the problem that eventually affects every tiled bathroom. Grout is porous, it stains, and in a shower it is the first thing to fail. Removing it from the assembly entirely removes the maintenance that comes with it.
Where lime still belongs
Lime is naturally hostile to mold because of its high pH, and it breathes, so humidity moves through it and leaves rather than collecting behind it.
On the walls of a bathroom, away from direct spray, lime performs well and looks beautiful. It does not belong inside the shower enclosure, and it will mark near a heavily used sink. In an older Boise house with no vapor barrier, lime on the non-wet walls plus microcement in the shower is often the right combination.
The one to avoid
Roman clay should not go in a bathroom. It handles scuffs better than flat paint, but it was not built for standing steam or direct splash. Sealing helps elsewhere in a house; in a bathroom it is solving the wrong problem.
Going over existing tile
Microcement can often be applied straight over sound, well-bonded tile. That is the main reason people choose it for a renovation: no demolition, no dumpster, and no weeks without a working shower.
The tile has to be firmly attached and the grout lines have to be filled and flattened first. We check both before committing to that approach.
